The Rabbit

  • 32 Miles; 17-22 mph pace
  • Sunday Mornings from Fairhaven Bicycles
  • First group departs 7:45; 8:15 in the Winter.

It took me two years to figure out why this ride was called the Rabbit, yeah there’s the whole catching up with the slower group, but really, its just a Rabbit:

See the ears, there above the lake? It’s a rabbit, right?

Well, maybe that’s not why. Anyways, the Rabbit is a year-round ride leaving from the southside on Sunday mornings. A slower group leaves at 7:45 followed by a faster group about five minutes later. Though not as sociable than the Donut (you’re working too hard) it’s a much better workout. Most Sundays you can expect each group to be around 5-10 riders.

The idea is that the first group gets a head start and the fast group tries to catch up. When the fast group passes, the slower group tries to grab on and finish out with them. The slower group tends to stay together pretty well, but the fast group can get strung out. If you get dropped, you’re on your own or swept up by the slower group (if you’ve made it that far). Typically the bunch holds together pretty well until the climb out of Lake Samish, which strings it out for the downhill TT back into Fairhaven for coffee at Avenue Bread.
